The Halifax Public Gardens is one of my favourite locations to photograph, especially in inclement weather. On this day there was light drizzle and fog which helped to add some mystery and depth to the scene. The tiny house below the bridge is a favourite with children of all ages.

A magenta sky and clear reflection on the calm lake just begged to be photographed! I used the foliage to add a natural frame to the scene.

Mill Lake, Upper Tantallon

I couldn’t fit the whole floral display into a single shot so I took a series of images and blended them in software to create a panorama. One of my followers said that it reminds her of a uterus!

Spider’s webs always look best in black and white. This fellow was patiently waiting for an unsuspecting insect to fly into it so that he could have lunch.

This great blue heron was kind enough to pose for me in the early morning light. Shortly afterwards he resumed his hunt for breakfast.

We have regular visits from barred owls in our yard. This one spent a couple of hours perched in the treetops preening his feathers to the annoyance of all the little birds and squirrels in the vicinity.

I was roaming along the Halifax waterfront taking photos of the architecture when I noticed everyone looking up. This osprey was perched atop a tower looking down, wondering what all the fuss was about. He soon became bored and began looking out into the harbour planning his next fishing trip.

I don’t know if birds yawn but this heron silently opened his mouth for a couple of seconds and then closed it as if he was just waking up. It was early morning after all!

Great Blue Heron

They’re officially known as American toads but I think this guy is a Canadian toad as he sits with his elbows up. He wasn’t much bigger than an acorn but he bravely posed for me as I took his photo from just a few inches away.

Many people mistakenly think this sculpture is a whale’s tongue but it’s actually a stylized wave created by artist Donna Hiebert. It’s rare to see it without kids climbing all over it. I suspect that the early morning hour was a deterrent. You can also see the museum ship HMCS Sackville in the background.

The Wave, Halifax Waterfront

I was looking for an elevated vantage point to shoot the Halifax cityscape and I don’t have a drone so I climbed to the upper level of the Purdy’s Wharf parkade. Six stories carrying a backpack full of camera gear! This is the view looking south about an hour after sunrise. It’s a mix of old and new buildings.

Downtown Halifax

A very controversial structure located near the Armdale roundabout on Halifax’s NW Arm. I jokingly refer to it as Scoliosis Place. People on a local Facebook group seem to universally hate it! I guess it’s a sign of the times although I personally prefer the historic buildings that make the city unique.
