Here are some of the most popular images from my Facebook Page for the month of April. Birds, a snowshoe hare, some spring flowers and a couple of landscape photos round out this month’s gallery. Enjoy!

At this time of the year a visit to Miner’s Marsh in Kentville, NS is mandatory for nature photographers. Birds are returning from their winter vacations and they’re getting ready for mating season. The redwing blackbirds are especially vocal about establishing their territory as you can see from this fellow below, belting out the song of his people!
Of all the ducks we have in our region the wood duck is my favourite. The males are especially striking with their vivid colours! I was lucky to be able to capture these two in some gorgeous evening light as they were preparing to roost for the night.
A fellow photographer shared a location where we could watch Bohemian Waxwings feeding near the marsh. They were so wrapped up in gorging on berries that they hardly noticed they were being photographed. Here are four of my favourite images from a few hundred that I shot that day.

I love hearing a song sparrow singing in the morning! This little one was very cooperative as I captured its photo while it perched on a thorn bush. The early morning sun gave perfect side lighting for this intimate portrait.
Who doesn’t love seeing crocuses pop up in everyone’s garden in early spring? I find it especially fascinating that they remain closed unless the sun is shining on them.
Pussy willows are another spring favourite. I was walking my dog Suzy when I spotted these fuzzy little ones covered in water droplets. Naturally, I reached for my camera and took the shot.
While visiting Miners Marsh to photograph birds I noticed this group of trees that were beginning to bud. There was a snow flurry at the time which gave the background a nice hazy effect. The red shrubs at the base of the trees were the icing on the cake!
We took Suzy for a hike in the hills near our home one sunny afternoon in April. She doesn’t usually like being photographed but I managed to capture this one before she realized what I was up to. Good girl, Suzy!
Burntcoat Head Park is a special attraction on the shore of the world famous Bay of Fundy. According to Wikipedia, It has the highest tidal range in the world, averaging about 16 metres (52 ft) due to tidal resonance in its funnel-shaped basin. In one half-day tidal cycle, around 100 billion tonnes (110 billion short tons) of water flows in and out, twice the combined flow of all the world’s rivers.
I captured this scene at sunset during low tide. Six hours later the water level would have been over my head!
The Easter Bunny often visits us during the month of April, leaving little brown easter eggs scattered throughout the woods.
This is actually a snowshoe hare. It looks mottled because it’s in transition from its white winter coat to its brown summer coat.
