Here are some of the most popular images from my Facebook Page for the month of January. This month’s blog includes snowy woodlands, a few black and white images, a galloping mare, a rare photo of a weasel and even some African violet flowers. Enjoy!

Her name is Layla and she’s a Friesian mare originally from the Netherlands. She loves to frolic in the snow! She was a challenge to photograph on this day as she’s coal black and her surroundings were bright white.
A forest of young oak trees withstand a January snowstorm. Nova Scotia winters can be hard on the plants and animals as we get variable conditions – anything from mild, rainy days to bitterly cold ones to major snowstorms with strong winds.
I hate getting out of bed when it’s still dark outside but it was worth it to capture this scene. Although it was cold there was little wind so it was quite enjoyable. We didn’t get the sunrise we’d hoped for but I do like those dramatic backlit clouds in the distance.
My photography app said that the sun was going to rise directly behind the lighthouse this morning so my buddy Kevin and I headed to the beach to capture the event. Sadly, there was a solid wall of cloud at the horizon so we didn’t get the shot we’d hoped for but we did get some dramatic backlight as the sun rose behind the clouds. When life gives you lemons…
It’s a rare treat to spot a weasel (aka ermine) as they tend to hunt at night. This one was dressed for winter but we didn’t have any snow on the ground at this point so it “stuck out like a sore thumb.” They’re awfully cute little critters, unless you’re a small rodent, of course!
A mild day after a deep freeze made for a great black and white photo shoot at the lake. It was REALLY slippery so I squatted on a rock to capture this scene, otherwise I would have been on my backside in a puddle of icy water.
Same scene as above, different day. Zoomed in a bit closer as there was no reflection in the foreground. This poor tree takes a lot of abuse as it’s perched on a rocky outcrop at the water’s edge.
Sometimes it’s just too miserable to go out and take photographs in January so it’s handy to have an indoor subject to shoot. Kathy’s African Violets were in bloom so I decided to do a little close up photography. I love the intricate nature of the flowers on this common houseplant.
Wandering along a dirt road with a camera in the middle of a snowstorm isn’t for everyone but it means that you might come home with a photo like this. Fortunately my camera is waterproof so I don’t have to worry about the snow that lands on it during these outings.
There’s an old rail line that’s been converted into an all purpose trail near our home. We often stop and sit on this bench to soak up the sights and sounds of nature. We didn’t sit on it this day however as the thick layer of snow looked like it might be a bit chilly on the backside.
