Whenever there’s a storm off the coast my buddy Kevin calls and says “Let’s go shoot some waves.” Who am I to disagree? This one was captured with a zoom lens just in front of the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse. The sun was off to the left so it highlighted the gorgeous aqua colour of the water perfectly.
On this trip I was hoping to get an explosive wave with the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse in the background. It took a lot of tries but this one finally happened and I couldn’t have been happier!
We often take our dog Suzy for a walk in Jerry Lawrence Provincial Park so I keep my camera handy for moments like this. The large cloud was in a perfect location to catch the setting sun’s light.
There’s a small nameless creek that runs alongside the St Margaret’s Bay rail trail. I was waiting for the larch (tamarack) trees to turn yellow so that I could shoot them from this location. The side lighting and dark clouds in the distance made it a memorable moment.
Conditions were perfect when Kevin and I headed to York Redoubt National Historic Site to shoot the fall colours. There was a faint mist in the air that added an ethereal quality to the scene.
Chilly fall mornings often mean that there will be mist over the (relatively) warm lake water. The rising sun added gorgeous backlight to the scene that made the red colours pop.
You haven’t seen RED until you’ve stood beside a Nova Scotia blueberry field in autumn! It almost looks like it’s on fire. If you haven’t eaten wild Nova Scotia blueberries, you haven’t eaten the best blueberries on the planet.
The setting sun lit up the tops of the trees as it dipped below the horizon. The light only lasted a couple of minutes but it was an incredible sight!
Fortunately Hurricane Melissa didn’t make landfall in Nova Scotia but it created some amazing waves! Kevin and I spent an afternoon photographing them at Duncan’s Cove near the mouth of Halifax Harbour. It helps to have a zoom lens when you’re shooting waves, otherwise you might get wet… or worse. The next 4 images are from that photo shoot.
Sanderlings are small shorebirds that run up and down the beach looking for tasty morsels deposited by waves as they wash in and out. They’re challenging to photograph as they’re constantly in motion. I’m not sure what this fellow picked up but I hope it was yummy.
After we got tired of shooting waves at Duncan’s Cove we drove to Sandy Cove to shoot waves passing by the Sambro Island lighthouse. Hurricane Melissa didn’t disappoint!
