Here are some of the most popular images from my Facebook Page for the month of February. Snowy landscapes, frozen rose hips and a trio of birds make up this month’s gallery. Enjoy!

I hiked onto a frozen lake in the middle of a snowstorm to capture some winter scenes. It was eerily quiet except for the sound of the wind blowing across the lake. I like how the trees in the background are almost obscured by the falling snow.

I was looking for an interesting foreground element to place in this landscape scene. Fresh cross country ski tracks were a perfect find! They draw you into the scene and even make you wonder what’s around that corner?

I’m always on the lookout for a gnarly tree. Finding one beside a brook in a snow covered forest was a bonus! The falling snow helped to visually separate the tree from the ones in the background, making it the star of the show.

When I spotted this small snow covered fir tree I felt it exemplified nature’s struggle to survive during harsh conditions. I hope it grows to become a tall adult someday.

I was hoping to find something interesting to try out my new camera’s macro (close up) feature. Rose hips with a dusting of fresh snowflakes made a perfect subject. I’ve never eaten them but I hear they are quite bitter. I prefer to leave them for the birds as they like to eat them when food is scarce during the winter.

Frozen rose hips

We don’t have many hardwood forests in Nova Scotia so I often use my neighbour’s yard as a substitute. I was excited to capture this colourful sunset as a backdrop to the maze of oak trees.

The setting sun lined up perfectly with this little brook making it look like a river of molten gold .

I love searching for interesting abstract shapes in nature. These snow covered rocks caught my eye during a hike on the lake after a snowstorm. I really like the smooth curves and the shadows cast by the side lighting.

A snowstorm changes a dull, lifeless winter landscape into something magical. This is the same oak forest as in the sunset photo above.

Chickadees are one of my favourite little birds. This fellow was watching me closely as he prepared to hit the bird feeder. I wonder if he was intentionally “mooning” me?

You usually hear woodpeckers before you see them. This little fellow was taking sunflower seeds from the bird feeder and pounding them to break the shells open. Look closely and you’ll see sunflower seed crumbs on his beak.

Nuthatches are smart investors. They take sunflower seeds and hide them in cracks and crevices in the tree bark for future use. Not this time though. You can see the excitement in this little one’s eye as it prepares to indulge in a freshly opened sunflower seed. A second later it was down the hatch!
