Here are some of the most popular images from my Facebook Page for the month of March. This month includes a mix of winter and spring landscapes, a few birds, Liam the cat and even a miniature pony. Enjoy!

I captured this scene as I was driving through the Annapolis Valley with a couple of photography buddies. We were intrigued by the contrast between the dark tones of the trunk against the brighter orange colours of the branches. There was a slight mist in the air which gave the background a nice faded appearance.
From my archives – we were driving along some back roads a few years ago when we came upon a paddock with a small herd of miniature ponies. This one captured my attention as she reminded me of a cover model. I love her hair style!
My friend Kevin and I were hiking along the coast when we came upon this pole trapped between the rocks. The spray from the waves had created a row of icicles along the log. I love how they glow in the light of the afternoon sun!
We could hear the loons calling on the lake so I grabbed my camera and a long lens and headed down to the shore in the hopes of capturing a photo. I spotted these three adults travelling together. It’s unusual to see three adults as they typically pair up in the spring. Perhaps it was last year’s offspring saying farewell to mom and dad before heading off to find their own mate.
I was hoping to get more loon photos but they weren’t in our cove that morning but I did see a pair of Juncos flitting about in the woods. This one stopped briefly to size me up before going back to Junco business. I jokingly refer to Juncos as “blue collar birds” because they don’t wear fancy clothes and they’re hard workers.
My friend Kevin and I drove to Miner’s Marsh in Kentville in late March in the hopes of capturing some images of the birds as they returned from their winter vacation. This song sparrow was belting out the song of his people as we wandered along the trail.
The forecasters were predicting fog so I headed to a small local beach to see if I could capture some moody images. I liked how the waves were wrapping around these rocks so I perched on some nearby boulders to avoid getting wet feet and captured this image.
We still had a bit of snow on the ground in early March so I headed to one of my favourite brooks to shoot some woodland images. I didn’t realize that there were four ducks photobombing my shot until I returned home and loaded the images onto my computer. So much for being an alert nature photographer!
I’m always on the lookout for scenes that I can convert to black and white. This trio of weatherbeaten trees caught my eye as I was hiking along a frozen lake in early March. The cloudy sky adds a nice ominous mood to the scene.
Our boy Liam poses for a portrait shot in the hopes of being paid in treats. His contract explicitly states that he must be paid in treats for every photo that I publish.
One of the things every nature photographer hopes for is a unique photo of a common subject. The “bird breath” shot is a challenge to capture because conditions need to be perfect. I got lucky on this trip as there wasn’t any sun to backlight the subject but you can still see the faint glow of his breath as this red-winged blackbird sings his love song.
Cardinals are difficult birds to photograph because they usually hang out among brambles or at the tops of tall trees. I got lucky when I stumbled upon this male picking through the gravel on the path as I was wandering along the trail looking for something to shoot. I got my knees dirty when I took this photo. There’s a saying among nature photographers – “Don’t wear your good clothes when you go out shooting.”
