Here are some of the most popular images from my Facebook Page for the month of June. Everything from stumps to song sparrows with a few other things thrown in. Enjoy!

I took this image of a stump along one of my favourite hiking trails. It’s actually a composite of 5 photos stacked together to give a sharp image as I was very close and I wanted the whole foreground in focus with a blurry background. I love how the green moss makes it look so alive!

I was hiking along the coast at Polly’s Cove when I noticed this distant sailboat lit up by the setting sun. Even with a long zoom lens it was still just a tiny part of the image! I like how it stands out against the grey sky and dark water.

These were the first lupins I spotted this spring. They stood proudly in the middle of an abandoned parking area that is gradually being reclaimed by nature.

We were walking our dog Suzy along a section of abandoned rail trail when I heard a squawking noise nearby. A great blue heron had been fishing in an adjacent stream and flew to the treetops when he heard us approaching. Fortunately the tree top was level with the trail and I was lucky to capture this image before he flew away. The blurry green leaves make a nice frame around the heron.

I was hiking along a trail on our property when I spotted this Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly land on a nearby shrub. He didn’t seem to mind my presence as he allowed me to capture a few images before he flew away. I’m not sure what happened to the back end of his left wing but it didn’t appear to hurt his flying ability.

Ever since we placed this piece of driftwood on our deck our cat Liam claimed it as his personal napping place. He fits the curvature purr-fectly!

There were SO MANY Lady’s Slippers in the forest this spring! This was one of the last ones I saw and it was bathed in gorgeous evening light just begging to be photographed.

We had a fair amount of rain for a few days prior to this walk in the woods and the ferns were celebrating! They make the forest floor look so alive, don’t they?

My buddy Kevin invited me to join him on an evening trip to MacCormack’s Beach to photograph terns. I’ve never attempted it before – what a challenge! They’re amazing aerial acrobats and they can change direction on a dime. I was lucky to capture this fellow as he looked straight at me while zooming past!

At the end of our trip to photograph terns we were walking back to the car when I noticed the setting sun reflected off the car carrier ship docked at the Dartmouth Autoport. The dramatic sky over Halifax Harbour was an added bonus!

I was walking over the bridge to Miner’s Marsh in Kentville when I spotted this little muskrat cruising along with a mouthful of bullrushes. I managed to capture a few shots before it ducked below the surface as it headed into its den for the night.

They may not be the flashiest birds but song sparrows have one of the best voices in the choir! This little fellow was belting out his song for all to hear at Miner’s Marsh in Kentville.
